Casino Bonus Wagering Requirements: How They Work and What to Check Before Playing

Casino bonus wagering requirements determine how much qualifying play may be required before bonus funds or associated winnings become withdrawable. This guide explains how the calculation works, which other bonus terms can change the real requirement and what to check before accepting or playing through a promotion.

Start here

What does the bonus actually require from you?

A wagering multiplier such as 10x, 20x or 40x tells you only part of the story. Before accepting a casino promotion, you also need to know what balance the multiplier applies to, which games count, whether stakes are restricted, how long you have to complete the requirement and what happens if you stop early.

Easy to understand

The bonus amount, wagering multiplier, eligible games, maximum bet and expiry period are stated clearly before you opt in.

Needs calculation

The headline says “20x wagering”, but you still need to establish whether that means 20x the bonus, the deposit and bonus together, or another specified amount.

Read the restrictions carefully

Important game exclusions, stake limits, cashout restrictions or cancellation rules are difficult to find or are explained only after the promotion has already started.

What a casino wagering requirement actually means

A wagering requirement is a condition attached to some casino bonuses that requires a specified amount of qualifying play before bonus funds or winnings connected with the bonus become withdrawable. It is usually expressed as a multiplier such as 10x, 20x or 30x.

The multiplier by itself is not enough to tell you how demanding a promotion is. You need to know what is being multiplied. A 20x requirement applied only to a £50 bonus creates a very different playthrough amount from a 20x requirement applied to a £50 deposit plus a £50 bonus.

Required wagering = the amount specified by the bonus terms × the wagering multiplier

The terms should also explain which wagers count towards that total. Some games may contribute fully, some may contribute only a percentage and some may be excluded completely. Maximum-bet rules, expiry periods and other restrictions can make two bonuses with the same headline multiplier behave very differently in practice.

How to calculate the real wagering amount

Start with the multiplier and then identify its base. Do not assume that “20x wagering” always means 20 times the advertised bonus amount; write down the amount being multiplied and calculate the complete qualifying playthrough before comparing the offer with another promotion.

Offer structure Example Required qualifying wagering
10x bonus only £50 bonus × 10 £500
20x bonus only £50 bonus × 20 £1,000
30x bonus only £50 bonus × 30 £1,500
20x deposit + bonus (£50 deposit + £50 bonus) × 20 £2,000
30x deposit + bonus (£50 deposit + £50 bonus) × 30 £3,000
The important question is “x what?”

A promotion advertised as 20x wagering can require twice as much play if the multiplier applies to both a £50 deposit and a £50 bonus instead of only the £50 bonus. These are mathematical comparisons rather than terms permitted in every market, so always identify the base and check the rules governing the promotion before comparing two offers.

A larger percentage bonus is not automatically better

Suppose one casino offers a £100 bonus with 30x wagering on the bonus and another offers a £50 bonus with 10x wagering on the bonus. The first promotion gives you more bonus money, but it also requires £3,000 of qualifying wagering. The second requires £500.

That does not automatically make the smaller bonus the better choice, because game restrictions and other conditions still matter. It does show why comparing bonuses only by their headline percentage or maximum amount can be misleading.

What balance is multiplied?

Check whether wagering applies only to the bonus, to the deposit and bonus together, to bonus winnings or to another amount defined in the terms. This single detail can substantially change the real playthrough.

Which games contribute?

Some promotions count different games at different rates. Slots may contribute fully while some table, live casino or specialty games contribute less or do not count at all.

What happens when you withdraw?

Check whether requesting a withdrawal cancels the bonus, removes unused promotional funds or has another consequence. Your own cash and bonus-restricted funds should not simply be treated as the same thing.

What other restrictions apply?

A wagering multiplier can sit alongside a maximum bet, expiry period, restricted games, excluded payment methods, maximum bonus amount or other conditions. Read the significant restrictions together rather than separately.

How game weighting changes the amount of play you need

A £10 wager does not necessarily reduce a £1,000 wagering requirement by £10 because promotions can assign different contribution percentages to different games. If a game contributes 100%, the full wager normally counts towards the remaining requirement; at 20%, only one fifth counts, while a game with 0% contribution does not reduce the wagering requirement at all.

Example contribution You wager Amount credited towards wagering
100% £10 £10
50% £10 £5
20% £10 £2
10% £10 £1
0% £10 £0
These percentages are examples

There is no universal game-weighting table used by all casinos. A promotion may use different percentages, exclude particular games or change contribution rules between offers. Check the specific promotion before playing.

Why contribution percentages matter

Imagine you have £1,000 of wagering left. At 100% contribution, £1,000 of qualifying wagers would complete the stated requirement. If you played only games contributing 20%, £1,000 of wagers would count as only £200 towards the requirement.

This is why a promotion with a modest multiplier can still take much longer to complete if the games you actually want to play contribute poorly. It also explains why the list of eligible games can matter as much as the headline wagering number.

Maximum-bet rules and other play restrictions

Some bonuses restrict the size of each wager while bonus funds or bonus-related winnings remain subject to wagering. A promotion might, for example, set a maximum permitted stake per spin or game round.

The important issue is not whether a maximum-bet rule exists. It is whether the restriction is clearly disclosed, easy to understand and applied consistently with the promotion’s terms.

  • Find the maximum stake before playing: do not assume your normal casino betting limit is permitted while a promotion is active.
  • Check whether the limit varies by game: different products or game types may be treated differently under the offer.
  • Understand what counts as one wager: this can matter in games with multiple betting positions or features.
  • Check whether bonus features are restricted: some promotions can exclude particular game features or methods of play.
  • Save the term before you start: if a later dispute concerns a staking rule, you need the version of the terms that applied when you opted in.
Do not assume one accidental stake has the same consequence everywhere

Different operators and jurisdictions can treat bonus-rule breaches differently. If a casino says a stake invalidated a promotion or winnings, ask it to identify the exact term, the wager that triggered the decision and how it calculated the amount affected.

Bonus expiry periods can matter as much as the multiplier

A wagering requirement can become much harder to complete if the bonus has a short expiry period. The terms may specify a deadline for activating the promotion, using free spins, completing wagering or withdrawing bonus-related winnings.

When checking the deadline, determine exactly when the clock starts. It may begin when you opt in, when the qualifying deposit is made, when bonus funds are credited or at another point specified in the offer.

Activation deadline

Some offers must be claimed or activated within a particular period. Missing that stage may mean the promotion is never added to the account.

Free-spin expiry

Free spins can have their own usage deadline that is separate from the wagering period applied to winnings generated from those spins.

Wagering deadline

A promotion may require the remaining playthrough to be completed within a stated number of days. Check what happens to the bonus balance if time expires first.

Withdrawal consequence

If bonus-related funds expire, the terms should explain what happens to the promotional balance and any winnings connected with it. Do not assume your unrestricted cash balance is affected in the same way.

Your cash balance and bonus balance are not the same thing

One of the most important distinctions in any casino promotion is between money that belongs to you without promotional restrictions and funds that remain subject to bonus conditions.

An operator may describe these using terms such as cash balance, deposit balance, bonus balance, restricted funds or promotional balance. The labels vary, but you should be able to determine which money is subject to wagering and which is not.

Balance What it generally represents What to establish
Your deposited cash Money you paid into the casino account. Whether it remains withdrawable while the promotion is active and whether withdrawing it cancels the bonus.
Bonus funds Promotional value added by the casino. Which wagering and play restrictions apply before these funds or related winnings become withdrawable.
Cash-derived winnings Winnings generated from unrestricted cash play. Whether the casino keeps these clearly separate from bonus-restricted winnings.
Bonus-derived winnings Winnings connected with promotional funds or free spins. Whether they remain subject to wagering, cashout limits or another restriction defined by the promotion.
Why this distinction matters

If you decide a promotion is not suitable, you need to understand what happens when you cancel it or withdraw. The terms should make clear whether promotional funds are removed and what happens to your own deposited money and any unrestricted winnings.

Deposit match, free spins and no-deposit bonuses can work differently

“Casino bonus” is a broad label. Different promotion types can create different wagering calculations and restrictions, so the same checklist should not be applied mechanically to every offer.

Promotion type How it typically works Terms that deserve attention
Deposit match The casino adds bonus funds based on part or all of a qualifying deposit. Match percentage, maximum bonus, minimum deposit, wagering base and eligible payment methods.
Free spins The player receives a specified number of spins on selected games. Eligible game, spin value, expiry, treatment of winnings and any wagering attached to those winnings.
No-deposit bonus Promotional funds or spins are supplied without a qualifying deposit. Wagering, maximum cashout, expiry, eligibility and whether verification or, where permitted, a later qualifying deposit is required before bonus-derived winnings become cashable.
Reload bonus A promotion adds value to a later qualifying deposit rather than only the first deposit. Opt-in requirements, eligible deposits, frequency, maximum bonus and whether terms differ from the welcome offer.
Cashback or loss-based promotion The operator returns a percentage of qualifying losses or activity under specified conditions. Calculation period, excluded games, maximum return, wagering on cashback and how “loss” is defined.

These descriptions are general examples rather than universal definitions. Operators can structure promotions differently, combine conditions in different ways and use their own balance terminology, so the actual terms supplied with the offer determine what applies to your account.

Maximum cashout and withdrawal restrictions

Some promotions, particularly no-deposit or free-spin offers in markets where such terms are permitted, can limit how much bonus-derived value becomes withdrawable. A maximum cashout can therefore matter even after the wagering requirement has been completed.

For example, if a promotion states that bonus-derived winnings are capped at £100, completing the wagering requirement does not necessarily mean a £300 promotional balance can all be withdrawn. The terms may provide that only £100 becomes cashable and the remaining promotional value is removed.

Check the cap before judging the headline bonus

A large advertised bonus can be much less valuable if winnings are heavily capped. The maximum cashout, where one exists, should be considered alongside the bonus amount and wagering requirement rather than discovered only after the playthrough is complete.

What to check before accepting a casino bonus

The safest time to understand a promotion is before you opt in or make the qualifying deposit. Save the important terms if you expect to use the bonus, particularly where the promotion is temporary or personalised.

  • Bonus amount or percentage
  • Maximum bonus value
  • Minimum qualifying deposit
  • Wagering multiplier
  • What amount the multiplier applies to
  • Eligible and excluded games
  • Game contribution percentages
  • Maximum permitted bet
  • Bonus activation deadline
  • Wagering completion deadline
  • Free-spin expiry where applicable
  • Maximum cashout where applicable
  • Excluded payment methods
  • Country or account eligibility
  • What happens if you cancel the bonus
  • What happens if you request a withdrawal
  • How cash and bonus balances are displayed
  • Where the full promotion terms are located

A useful pre-bonus calculation

Before accepting an offer, calculate the total qualifying wagering and then ask yourself whether you would realistically want to play enough eligible games to complete it within the deadline. This is more useful than asking whether a bonus is “big”, because a £200 promotion is not automatically attractive if completing it requires a level of play you would never otherwise choose.

Bonus terms that deserve closer attention

Complexity alone does not prove that a promotion is unfair, but important restrictions should not require detective work. If a term can materially change the value of the offer or the player’s ability to use or withdraw funds, it deserves attention before the promotion is accepted.

Unclear multiplier

The offer says “20x” but not what is multiplied

You cannot tell from the headline or significant terms whether wagering applies to the bonus alone, deposit plus bonus or another amount.

Ask: for the exact calculation and total wagering amount.

Hidden restriction

The maximum bet is difficult to find

The promotion highlights the bonus and wagering requirement but an important staking restriction appears only deep inside separate terms.

Check: which significant play restrictions were shown before you opted in.

Game eligibility

The games you want to play barely contribute

The headline wagering requirement looks manageable, but the games you normally use contribute only a small percentage or are excluded.

Calculate: how much real wagering those contribution rates would require.

Terms changed

The casino relies on a different term after you opted in

The operator says a new or materially different restriction applies to a promotion you already started.

Save: the terms and promotional page that applied when you accepted the offer.

Funds affected

A bonus dispute is being used to remove unrelated cash

The casino says a promotional breach allows it to confiscate funds that you believe came from your own unrestricted deposit or cash play.

Ask: the operator to separate the affected bonus balance from your deposit and cash-derived winnings.

No calculation

Support cannot explain your remaining wagering

The casino shows a requirement or blocks withdrawal but cannot explain how the remaining amount was calculated from your bonus activity.

Ask: for the bonus amount, multiplier, eligible wagering already credited and remaining requirement.

What to do if a casino says you broke the bonus rules

A bonus dispute is easier to assess when you separate the promotional rule from the money the casino says is affected. Do not start by arguing that the entire promotion is unfair. First establish exactly which term the operator says you breached, which wager triggered the decision and how the casino calculated the financial consequence. If the dispute is also holding up a payout, our Delayed casino withdrawals guide explains how to identify the payment stage and preserve the wider withdrawal evidence.

  1. Save the offer and the terms that applied
Keep the promotional page, significant conditions and complete bonus terms where available. Record when you opted in and when the disputed play occurred.
  2. Ask for the exact term allegedly breached
Request the wording of the maximum-bet rule, game restriction, expiry condition or other provision the casino says applies.
  3. Ask which wager or transaction triggered the decision
Request the game, date, stake and transaction information rather than accepting a broad statement that “bonus terms were breached”.
  4. Separate bonus funds from your own money
Ask the casino to explain which balance or winnings it considers bonus-derived and which amounts came from unrestricted cash play.
  5. Ask for the financial calculation
If winnings or balances have been removed, request a breakdown showing how the amount was calculated and why each affected sum falls under the disputed term.
  6. Use the formal complaint process if the explanation remains unresolved
Submit a concise complaint containing the promotion, relevant terms, account history, disputed wagers and the outcome you are seeking.

“Please identify the exact bonus term you believe I breached, the wager or transaction that triggered the decision, and how you calculated the amount removed or made non-withdrawable.”

A current Great Britain example: wagering is capped at 10x bonus funds

This is a global guide, so the following rules apply specifically to gambling businesses licensed by the Gambling Commission in Great Britain and should not be treated as worldwide casino rules. Since 19 January 2026, Gambling Commission licensees cannot apply a wagering requirement above 10 times the bonus funds. The same social-responsibility rule requires incentive terms to be clear, transparent, fair and readily accessible, and prevents a single incentive from combining multiple gambling product types such as casino and betting.

Casinos licensed in other jurisdictions can be subject to different bonus requirements, and some offshore promotions may use substantially higher wagering. Check the regulator, operator and promotion governing your account rather than applying the Great Britain limit to every casino.

Evidence to save if a bonus becomes a dispute

Save the version of the offer you accepted

If the promotion later becomes a dispute, preserve enough information to reconstruct the offer as it appeared when you opted in. Temporary pages and personalised terms can change or disappear, so keep the advertised wording, significant conditions, complete terms, balance history and the casino’s explanation together in one organised record.

How we checked this guide

Players Time treats bonus mechanics and regulatory rules separately. Wagering multipliers, game weighting, expiry periods and cashout restrictions vary between individual promotions. Where this guide refers to a specific legal or regulatory requirement, the market is identified rather than presented as a worldwide rule.

Frequently asked questions

It means the balance specified by the promotion must generate qualifying wagers equal to twenty times that amount. If 20x applies to a £50 bonus, the required wagering is £1,000. If it applies to a £50 deposit plus a £50 bonus, the required wagering would be £2,000. Always check what the multiplier applies to.

That depends on the promotion. Some bonuses calculate wagering from the bonus amount alone, while others can use a different base where permitted. The terms should identify exactly what amount the multiplier applies to, so do not compare offers using the multiplier alone.

It generally means the full value of an eligible wager counts towards the wagering requirement. If you wager £10 on a game with 100% contribution, £10 normally reduces the outstanding requirement. At 20% contribution, the same £10 wager would count as £2. Always use the contribution table for the specific promotion.

Promotions can contain maximum-stake restrictions where permitted, but the applicable rule should be disclosed clearly in the bonus terms. Check the stake limit before playing and ask for the exact wager involved if the casino later claims that you breached it.

The answer depends on the applicable rules and promotion. In Great Britain, UKGC licensees must allow players to withdraw their deposit balance while a bonus is pending or active, subject to general regulatory obligations, and promotional wagering restrictions must not apply to play with that deposit balance. Withdrawing may still cancel the bonus itself.

That depends on the promotion. Bonus funds and bonus-derived winnings may expire or be removed if the wagering deadline passes, while unrestricted cash should be treated separately according to the rules governing the account. Check the expiry and cancellation terms before starting the promotion.

For casinos licensed by the Gambling Commission in Great Britain, wagering requirements on bonus funds cannot exceed 10 times the bonus amount under LCCP 5.1.1. The rule has applied since 19 January 2026. This is a Great Britain-specific limit and should not be assumed to apply to casinos licensed elsewhere.

A lower multiplier generally means less stated playthrough, but it does not tell you everything about the promotion. Game weighting, maximum bets, expiry, cashout limits and the amount used as the wagering base can make an offer with a lower multiplier less attractive than it first appears.
